Hess discusses his one performance with Stokowski in Letters from Morocco by Peggy Glanville-Hicks and Paul Bowles and the party at Stokowski's apartment following the performance, at which he sat with David Randolph; he also discusses his experiences with Deems Taylor, first in the Philadelphia Opera Company and later in other settings. He also describes singing for Stravinsky. He mentions Fritz Reiner, Jane Bowles, Elliott Carter, Robert Shaw, Freddy Klein, and Herbert Menges.
